From JOSS WHEDON, creator of "Buffy" and "Serenity"...
|
Watch the teaser for Joss Whedon's three episode internet musical "DOCTOR HORRIBLE'S SING-ALONG BLOG"!
It tells the story of a low-rent super-villain, Dr. Horrible (played by Neil Patrick Harris), who maintains a video blog to chronicle his efforts to be accepted by the Evil League of Evil. Dr. Horrible also has a softer side seen when he battles his arch-nemesis, the two-faced Captain Hammer (played by Nathan Fillion), for the heart of Penny (played by Felicia Day), a cute girl from the laundromat, that he's too shy to talk to.

Michael Bracco BOOK SIGNING!
Wed, March 19, 2008 11am - 7 pm
BIRTH (Graphic Novel, SC)
Writer/Art/Cover: Michael S. Bracco
Publisher: Alterna Comics
B&W, 88 pages
On Wednesday, March 19, 2008 from 11am to 7 pm, Michael S. Bracco will be at Comics Kingdom to celebrate the release of his debut graphic novel BIRTH, with a signing. Michael started in comics with his self published title, Atty & Max back in 2004. Now he runs an Apparel design company called Spaghetti Kiss and is working on the series to follow BIRTH called NOVO (Volume 1 is due out in June).
Below are a few review quotes:
"Fans of A DISTANT SOIL, PRIDE OF BAGHDAD and any kind of war fiction will enjoy this book. BIRTH isn't so much about war but about the price of conflict and in my view is one of the best gems of the year. Pick it up. You won't regret it."
- Joshua Pantalleresco (ComicBloc.com)
"In both its visuals and its writing, this title is absolutely stunning."
- 5 star Review from Alex Haas (Indycomicreview.com)
"No matter how much you don't want yet another comic to add to your pull list, you'll be wanting whatever Bracco cooks up to spin out on a plate for us hungry hungry hippos. Satisfying, filling, more to come. Eats don't get better than this."
-Dave Baxter (BrokenFrontier.com)

In this excerpt from an interview with ComicNews
Michael Bracco, 28 year old comic creator and Baltimore middle school art teacher, discusses the plot of his new book:
|
|
COMICNEWS: "Tell our readers what ‘BIRTH’ and ‘NOVO’ are about."
MICHAEL S. BRACCO: "BIRTH is a kind of Tragic Sci-Fi Fairy Tale about a planet consumed by a war between it’s two dominating species, the Aquans and the Terans, who have spent their existences blaming each other for their own evolutionary shortcomings. It’s really a book about the nature of conflict and how we create conflict and use blame to excuse ourselves from taking responsibility for our insecurities and inadequacies."

Matt T's Comic Review
Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born #1
Stephen King/Robin Furth/Peter David/ Jae Lee/Richard Isanove
Marvel Comics
OKAY, YOU'RE PROBABLY ASKING ONE OF TWO QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS BOOK. EITHER:
1) Oh my god, I LOVE Stephen King, and the Dark Tower books are my FAVORITES!!!!! Does this comic live up to the level of what might be King's magnum opus?!??
OR
2) Oh my god, I cannot STAND Stephen King or his insane fans, and I presume this comic is just another crappy tie-in. Is it actually worth all the hype?
The good news is, I don't have to give two answers -- whichever question you're asking, the answer is yes. Marvel's interpretation of King's work is a genuinely excellent comic, no matter your familiarity with the source material. If you love King's original, you'll find this retelling of Roland's quest -- in a slightly more chronological order -- a fascinating, well-executed, almost reverent interpretation of the work. Peter David's script maintains King's voice and most of his best lines (including the memorable series opener, although David teases around it a few times before giving up the money shot),
and Jae Lee and Richard Isanove blow the roof off with their art. There were at least three separate times in twenty-odd pages where I actually stopped and said, "Man, that is JUST how I pictured it." (And two or three more where I thought, "That's not how I pictured it, but it's much, much better.")
If you're not familiar with King's books, or even if you actively loathe them ... this is still an excellent book. David is a consummate professional; there's a reason he was one of the only ones to make the jump from Marvel sales to Marvel creative a quarter century ago, and it's the same reason that he's still around and relevant all these years later: he's a damned solid comic writer. At his worst, he's better than 85% of what's on the shelves, and this is FAR from his worst. And, as noted above, Lee and Isanove are doing the work of their already-storied careers with the art.(I fully expect to see them roundly honored for this one at the usual awards next year.) This is a top-notch fantasy comic, exactly the kind of non-super-hero genre comic Marvel has never before managed to produce, and if you're even remotely interested in that sort of thing, you should pick this up.
I'm not sure how else to put it. No matter what baggage you're bringing to it (or not), this is a very, very good comic. It's well worth your $3.99.
